Sunnyvale is one of the major cities that make up the Silicon Valley, located in Santa Clara County. To the north it borders parts of San Jose and the San Francisco Bay, while to the west is Mountain View and Santa Clara, and to the south is Cupertino. It’s located on the El Camino Real, a historic thoroughfare, and Highway 101. Since 2000 the population has changed somewhat but not drastically, growing 0.3% by 2008 to 132,000; by 2012 the population had increased quite a bit more, however, to 146,197 persons with a median household income of $100,000.
The first high school that opened in Sunnyvale was Fremont High School, in 1923, becoming a military base during World War II and before its first enrollment. This was the beginning of a military association with Sunnyvale, one which grew when Congress located the West Coast dirigible base in Sunnyvale and only grew as the economy of Sunnyvale changed its focus from fruit to high-tech during World War II. After the war ended, the remaining corn and fruit farms were used as the base for the future Sunnyvale community. Lockheed relocated to Sunnyvale and other high tech firms followed, creating the high net worth individuals that live in the city today for the most part. Just a few of these companies are Ariba, Mirapoint, Yahoo!, Spansion, Palm Inc, NetApp, AMD, Juniper Networks, and Maxim Integrated Products. The city was incorporated in 1912.
Today the estimated median house or condo value is $700,000, up from $441,000 in 2000 — nearly a doubling in a decade. Sunnyvale is also prized not just for its quality homes and rich history, but also for its diversity, with hispanics, whites and asian individuals being equally represented approximately. Three airpots are available in Sunnyvale, including the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airpot, and those located in Oakland and San Francisco. Children attend private schools and public schools from Santa Clara Unified, Sunnyvale and Cupertino Union school districts, with over a dozen elementary schools, four middle schools and three high schools located within Sunnyvale. When it comes to entertainment, Sunnyvale features the usual shops, movie theaters and malls — more than a dozen shopping centers, in fact, in addition to numerous spectacular parks — but the city also features the Sunken Gardens Golf Course, the Sunnyvale Community Center, the Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum and the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course.
